Mail

Free Self-Hosted Email, Alongside Your Websites

Run mailboxes for your domains on your own server, managed in the same panel as the websites that use them. Mail is part of every Nodekeeper plan, Free included — not a trial and not a paid add-on.

What is included All plans, including Free

Receive and read

  • Inbound SMTP for your domains
  • IMAP and POP3, with TLS
  • Webmail with single sign-on from the panel

Send

  • Outbound queue, delivered directly to the recipient’s mail server or through a relay you configure
  • Retries and bounce messages

Domain setup

  • DKIM signing
  • A DNS check for the records the domain needs
  • Catch-all addresses

Runs contained

  • A separate mail service process running as an unprivileged system user, not as root
  • Synchronisation between a master node and child nodes

What you need to run it

Network

  • Outbound port 25 open — or a relay (smarthost) to send through. Many cloud providers block port 25 by default; ask yours.
  • Inbound port 25 reachable from the internet to receive mail; IMAP/POP3 ports for your users’ mail apps.
  • A reverse DNS (PTR) record for the sending IP, set at your server provider.

Domain and server

  • Access to the domain’s DNS to publish MX, SPF and DKIM records.
  • A TLS certificate for the mail host name (certificate management is in the same panel).
  • Disk space and bandwidth for mailboxes and backups — on your own server, at your cost.

Boundaries, stated plainly

Limits and prerequisites
  • There is no built-in inbound spam or virus filtering today. Plan for it before you give mailboxes to users who receive a lot of external mail.
  • Nobody can promise inbox placement: delivery depends on your IP’s reputation, DNS records, sending volume and content.
  • Nodekeeper is software you run. Your server, its IP reputation and the mail stored on it remain your responsibility; Nodekeeper does not operate mail delivery for you.
  • Back up mailboxes like any other data — backup schedules and destinations are in the same panel.

Selling hosting with mail?

Hosting providers can set mail quotas per customer through the WHMCS integration, which is part of Business. See hosting-provider workflows.

Questions

Is mail really free?

Yes. The mail features on this page are in every plan, including Free. You do not need to upgrade to send or receive mail. Paid plans add other things — analytics, collaboration, virtualization, storage.

Can I send mail from a cloud VPS?

Only if the provider lets outbound port 25 through, or if you configure a relay service. Check this before moving production mail.

Is this a hosted email service?

No. It is mail-server software that runs on your machine. We do not host your mailboxes.

Where do I start?

Install Nodekeeper, add your domain, publish the DNS records the check asks for, then create mailboxes. The documentation covers installation.
